Zu Lappland gehören nur die drei nördlichsten Bezirke Finnlands, deren gemeinsame Fläche aber ebenso gross ist wie die der Regierungsbezirke Uusimaa sowie Turku und Pori zusammen!

Lappland hat nicht viele Landwirtschaften: die meisten in der Gemeinde Inari, 9 km2 und die wenigsten in Utsjoki 2,7 km2, Enontekiö liegt flächenmässig dazwischen.

Im Süden leben über 1,5 Millionen, im Norden nur etwas mehr als zehntausend Menschen. Hier hat man Bewegungsfreiheit: auf einen Quadratkilometer leben im Durchschnitt 0,3 - 0,5 Menschen.

Die Vegetation besteht stellenweise nur aus verkrüppelten Fjällbirken: die Kieferngrenze verläuft nördlich vom Dorf Enontekiö zur norwegischen Grenze und von dort am Inari-See vorbei nach Nordosten.

Der grösste Teil der Gemeinde Enontekiö gehört zu Fjäll-Lappland. Der Ounas, 723 m hoch, ragt südlich von Hetta empor, und die höchste Stelle in Finnland liegt ganz im Nordwesten: der Berg Halti erreicht die respektable Höhe von 1328 m.

In Finnlands nördlichster Gemeinde Utsjoki liegt das tiefe Flusstal des Teno, der Norwegen und Finnland mehr vereint als trennt. Noch vor zwanzig Jahren soll das Dorf der Gemeinde in einem weglosen Gebiet gelegen haben, heute laufen geschotterte Wege an den meisten Flüssen entlang. An der Mündung des Utsjoki liegt ein Hotel, anderswo sind die Unterkünfte anspruchsloser.

The deep river valley of the Teno, the Norway and Finland united more is located in the municipality northest of Finland of Utsjoki as separates. Die Gemeinde Inari hat ihren Namen nach dem gleichnamigen See erhalten, in dem es ca. 3000 Inseln und Riffe gibt. Der See ist 1386 km2 gross 80 km lang 41 km breit und bis zu 100 m tief. Er friert im Dezember zu, das Eis schmilzt im Juni. Für Wanderer sind die Fjällhochebenen ein Paradies für. Ivalo am Inari-See ist mit dem Flugzeug aus Deutschland erreichbar.
